Dr. Sarah Weisbrod is Instructor of Flute at Bemidji State University where she teaches applied flute lessons and methods. She recently finished her Doctorate of Musical Arts at the University of Minnesota, where she wrote a comprehensive learning guide to Marcel Moyse's 24 Little Melodic Studies for her dissertation. Weisbrod holds a Master of Music from the University of Minnesota and a Bachelor of Music, cum laude, in flute performance with a minor in computer science from Concordia College, Moorhead, MN. Her primary teachers include Immanuel Davis, Julia Bogorad-Kogan, and Debora Harris. Weisbrod also studies Alexander Technique with Tully Hall.
She has served as principal flutist with the Fargo-Moorhead Opera Company, Mesabi Symphony Orchestra, North Shore Philharmonic Orchestra, and is currently a substitute flutist with the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony Orchestra. She has appeared as a soloist performing Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 2, Chaminade’s Concertino, and Griffes’ Poem with ensembles on Minnesota’s Iron Range.
PROFESSIONAL BIO
Weisbrod has participated and performed in masterclasses for William Bennett, Julia Bogorad-Kogan, Adam Kuenzel, Lorna McGhee, and Amy Porter. She maintains a private studio where her students have earned many awards and honors such as becoming members of honor bands, earning scholarships, performing in the Minnesota Music Educators Association All-State ensembles, and participating in the Greater Twin Cities Youth Symphonies.
Combining her expertise in both the music and computer science fields, Weisbrod’s current research interests include the use of discrete mathematics in music analysis. In 2007, she worked with Steven Makela of Concordia College on a composition for flute, marimba, and computer, where she designed the computer interface using MAX/MSP.
Weisbrod is a member of the Upper Midwest Flute Association, the National Flute Association, the British Flute Association, and the National Association for Music Education.
In this masterclass, you’ll learn the essential elements of each etude and how to practice them using an analytical and melodic approach while still incorporating the essence of Moyse’s teaching through metaphor.
